Bess Baker's
Piano Teaching Method
Bess Baker came under the tutelage of her mother, Barbara Ann Baker, a piano performance major from Florida State University, at the age of nine where she studied classical then eventually contemporary music.
With classical music, Bess studied such notable composers as Bach, Beethoven, Clementi, Prokofiev, Debussy and the like. Therefore, Bess encourages the study of classical music first for a solid foundation for her students in the study of piano.
A strong believer in artistic expression from the very first lesson ("dynamics"), Bess starts with scales and finger exercises with her students to build strength and flexibility in their fingers.
Bess points out the piano is a percussive instrument and is great for emotional release, as well as improving math skills, typing skills, multi-tasking skills and hand-eye coordination.
Over her 20-year career as a piano teacher, Bess has worked out of most of the popular piano teaching books (including John Thompson, Schaum, Bastien, Faber and Faber, etc.).
Music theory also is carefully taught by Bess along with each new piece. Contemporary music will be taught by Bess once the student has mastered the basic skills on the piano.
Bess has fun with her students during lessons -- which lends itself to more practice at home by the student. Her students are usually having so much fun they don't even realize how much they are learning (see Testimonials).
However, as the pieces become more difficult it's important that the student continues to practice. Bess recalls getting really frustrated and wanting to quit playing piano but her mother encouraged her not to. Bess is now so grateful to her mom for those nurturing words because by continuing to learn how to play the piano Bess now has a life and a career in teaching music, singing and songwriting.
