Biography of Bess Baker
A professional singer/songwriter from Washington D.C. who now lives in Titusville, Florida, Bess Baker is currently offering virtual voice coaching and piano lessons via Zoom for teenagers and adults from beginners to professionals anywhere in the country.
In addition to her own performing career as a singer/songwriter, Bess has been a top-notch vocal and piano coach for more than 20 years.
One of Bess's vocal students, Chana Rose Sosnowicz, recently became accomplished enough of a singer after working with Bess for only two years to submit one of her songs to the Grammys. Bess also was filmed giving Chana Rose a voice lesson for an HBO special by an Academy Award-nominated documentarian.
Bess has performed music since the age of five, studied classical and contemporary piano since the age of nine, and has written her own music since the age of 11. She was trained at the School of Music at the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and was selected as one of only five women in vocal performance accepted in a nationwide audition.
In a master class with Charles Strouse, the composer of "Annie," Bess’s performance of "Little Girls" was described as " … the best rendition I have ever heard - FLAWLESS!" While at Carnegie-Mellon, Bess studied classical piano with John Swartzoff, a noted Julliard graduate.
As a singer/songwriter, Bess produced and created her own CD titled "Changes in the Light" (see Bess Music) as well as performing some of the songs from that CD at a number of houses of worship across South Florida.
Bess has performed in jazz nightclubs such as Charlie Byrd's in Georgetown in Washington D.C. and Tuxedo Junction in South Florida. She also was the lead singer for The Larry Scott Experience, a top-40 band which was the highest-paid trio in the Washington D.C. area.
In addition, Bess directed several plays in Washington D.C. and South Florida including the musical "We've Only Just Begun" as part of a large convention in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Bess also is a professional songwriter and is currently writing new songs for herself and other artists.
As a result of singing in so many different styles of music herself, Bess is now able to teach singers who want to improve their craft in all of the following musical genres: pop, jazz, rock, musical theater, gospel, rhythm-and-blues or country.
